Whenever we’re in the Music Row/Midtown neighborhood, DeSano Pizza Bakery is one of our go-to take-out spots. The classic char-spotted Napoletana-style pies — made with imported, finely ground 00 flour, San Marzano tomatoes and authentic buffalo mozzarella — cook quickly in Italian wood-fired ovens. No advance planning or calling ahead required.
The typical plan is to pick up a classic margherita pizza early in the day. (It reheats beautifully on the grill or in the oven.) Make your own leafy green salad and arrange thinly sliced Italian meats and olives on a platter, and you’re all set for pizza night Napoletana, whether it be for your family or an entire party.
However, our typical plan may be changing, and we may be dining in. On a recent visit to pick up a pie, we were glad to see that DeSano has opened a full bar with seasonal craft cocktails and now offers a wider selection of beer and wine. The big room and bar, adjacent to the original dining room, opens at 5 p.m. and is ideal for all group events, including kids’ birthday parties, family dinners, bachelorette parties or after-game team gatherings. They even offer a projection screen, so you can reserve the room for business meetings.
The original dining room is windowless, so the giant glass garage door in the new space is spectacular. (It might even be a comfortable spot for viewing the downtown Fourth of July fireworks.) The room is filled with picnic tables, flat screen TVs and a giant wall mural. Full food and drink service is available to patrons at the bar, and even if you’re grabbing take out, the bar is perfect for a quick beer before heading home.
DeSano is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. until the dough runs out. The new bar is open Sunday through Wednesday 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Thursday through Saturday from 5 p.m. until 11 p.m.
